About SOOKIE (KIDS 8 AND UP)

Applicants must meet the following requirements: Setting: Rural, suburban Dwelling: Single family; limited or no steps Physical fence required Mar 13, 2026: Sookie recently tried the underwater treadmill, and while she gave it her best effort, it’s just not her preferred activity. Going forward, we’ll continue building her strength through gentle walks on grass and on the runners throughout the house. She is an incredibly sweet girl with a big personality. Sookie is on a routine and communicates clearly when she needs to go out—every day we get better at understanding the “Sookie language.” She has gained weight, continues to grow stronger, and shows so much resilience. Sookie is wonderful with dogs of all sizes and truly enjoys their company. She sleeps through the night and spends her days relaxing with the resident dogs and humans. Her gentle nature and gratitude shine through in everything she does. Feb 20, 2026: Sookie has been working hard on getting stronger. We have put area rugs everywhere, so she can take several tiny steps at a time. It's a huge improvement considering her condition when she first arrived months ago. She loves her doggie friends and spending time exploring in the yard, although that was limited with the cold and snow that we've had. Her coat is now shiny and she has gained weight. Now that her pressure sores have healed, she has been cleared to try the underwater treadmill. That's our next goal. If you can find enough love in your heart to care for a disabled dog who will give you only gratitude in return, consider Sookie. Jan 8, 2026: Sookie had so much fun around the holidays. She played with some doggie friends who came over and spent time in the yard, her favorite place. Her favorite Santa toy was a big tennis ball. She loves toys, but she destroys them fast, so you have to supervise that. Her back legs continue to get strong. Many times she will eat her meal standing up while using an elevated bowl. She really is an awesome creature and incredibly sweet. If you can find enough love in your heart to care for a disabled dog who will give you only gratitude in return, consider Sookie. Dec 5, 2025: Sookie has all the lab traits: she LOVES food, loves to explore the yard, loves belly rubs, loves to play with the other dogs, loves to snuggle next to you. She can't use her back legs, but she either runs around on her knees because her front end is super strong, or she uses the wheels. She is very, very fast and continues to get stronger every day. She tries so hard to stand up and when she does, she can hold herself up for several minutes. If you're okay with changing diapers and accepting a disabled dog into your heart and home, please consider this sweet girl. She makes you forget that she is not 100% physically, because her personality is total sweetness and gratitude. Nov 11, 2025: Sookie is checking in to show you that she's been working on strengthening her back legs. We often find her standing up for a few minutes on her own. She is a love to have around, full of kisses and showing us her belly so we can rub it. We had two small dogs visit for a few days, and she did great with them. At first she's really excited, but then she continues to go about her day. If you have it in your heart to care for a disabled dog, please consider Sookie. Sep 26, 2025: If I could only use one word to describe Sookie, it would be sweetheart. She is so incredibly sweet and grateful. Her biggest challenge is being paralyzed in the hind legs, but she scoots around the house and uses her wheels outside. Sookie is incredibly mellow for her age. She sleeps through the night, chills or plays with the resident dogs during the day. Diaper changes are easy to do. She knows the drill and stands still while you change it. She has gotten stronger and tries really hard to take a few steps. A total sweetheart who works constantly around her challenges. Aug 29, 2025: Sookie had her first appointment with the rehab facility, and we're feeling optimistic. We've been given exercises to do at home to help her strengthen her back legs. She can already stand up for a very short time, so this is encouraging. She continues to be an easy foster. She hangs out with the resident dogs, sleeps next to Foster Mom while she's at her desk, and follows the routine. She loves tennis balls and hanging out outside now that the weather is cooler. This is one determined girl. If you want a very special and loving girl, please consider Sookie. Aug 20, 2025: Sookie continues to do well and is an easy foster other than having to change her diapers. She knows the routine and is very cooperative. Her spay sutures come out this week, so she will be able to get back on the wheels. She is great with other dogs of all sizes and loves to play with all of them. She continues to be obsessed with the tennis ball. If you want a dog with the sweetest personality, but who has some physical limitations, please consider her. She is looking for a loving person who is strong enough to help her with a sling when she goes outside. Aug 14, 2025: Meet Sookie – the sweetest little fighter you’ll ever meet! ❤️ Sookie is recovering beautifully from her spay surgery, and along the way, we’ve discovered her absolute obsession with tennis balls. She’ll happily chase them in her cart or “retrieve” them during floor time – her joy is contagious! Caring for Sookie is easier than you might think. Aside from a quick diaper change routine, she’s a breeze! She sleeps through the night, adores mealtime and treats, and hangs out in her x-pen like a champ when we’re out. She loves to play and snuggle with the three resident dogs, and her adorable little head tilt will melt your heart. Sookie is ready for her forever home. If you believe in the magic of giving a special needs dog a chance, she will show you that love truly conquers all. 🐾💛 She is good with large and small dogs. Unknown with cats and approved for children 8 and up. Sookie is a 2-year old black spayed female. She is paralyzed in the hind legs, but can stand up for brief periods with minimal assistance. She is current on vaccines. She weighs 62 pounds. READ MEDICAL TAB. Sookie will need another heartworm test in January 2026 as we don't have proof she's been on heartworm preventatives prior to coming to Lab Rescue. Sookie was an owner surrender.
